Our first born baby Trooper (named after an Iron Maiden song), our beloved dog died early this morning. We are so sad and so thankful that we had him in our lives for the last 12 1/2 years.
Jim and I got Trooper when we had only been together for 1 year, my dad and step mom gave him to us and told me that if Jim and I ever broke up I had to take him with me. Little did we all know Trooper was definitely going to be Jim's dog. They use to go everywhere together and whenever Jim brought home fast food he made sure that Trooper got his own hamburger or enough of whatever he was eating to share. Until about 2 years ago he slept with us every night. He was spoiled and had a great life!
He had a couple of problems over the last few years, a hernia that we repaired before the kids were born and then another one about 2 years ago that we couldn't afford to fix with 3 babies. He was blind and I think a little deaf but both were just age. On Friday Jim said he thought he was bad off and we needed to put him down today. Then on yesterday he stayed in the room with us most of the day but really didn't want to be bothered much. I wrapped him up and took him to bed with me last night just wanting to be near him but he only stayed with me a couple of hours in the bed. He came back in the room at 3Am and I was sure he was going because his breathing was so loud and he was so cold. I wrapped him up and said goodbye and headed to work. He must have been coming to tell me goodbye because when Jim awoke this morning he was gone.
The kids were fine with it, they keep saying Trooper is in heaven but they want to know who took him there. I don't think they really understand and I'm sure there will be lots of questions over the next few days.
We were all so lucky to have such a wonderful puppy and I thank God for allowing us to love him for as long as we have.

Misty, that was such a nice post! We sure know about losing long term pets. We had a siberian Husky that was 15, and a cat that was 16. Many tears were shed.
It sounds like you guys loved Trooper and that Trooper loved you back. You can't ask for more than that.
Hugs!
My heart goes out to you. I have said good bye to several pets and it is never easy. I have tears just typing this.
I'm sending you a big hug,
Misty

Oh man that is a total Bummer!! God bless Trooper..he looked like a total swwetheart too! Sending a big hugs your way....
Oh no, I'm sorry! We had to put our only dog down right after the triplets were born - his back bones were fusing together and he was in a LOT of pain - the kids still miss him and talk about him. I wish the girls could've known him. Though the Lord knew we couldn't have handled 5 kids and a sick dog!
